Before working as a designer, Ben
worked as a sculptor. This is a selection of his
work from this period. As you can see, a lot of
pieces already were related to design. So perhaps
not such an unexpected switch after all.

Traditional
distilled Dutch Gin (Jenever) in a brand new packing.
On
the invitation of the European Ceramic Work Centre
in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, the Dutch
designers Jan Melis en Ben Oostrum (MNO) designed
a hip stone bottle for this age-old Dutch spirit.
According to the designers of MNO, memories of a country
stick mainly to the ordinary consumer goods, to regional
vegetation, spirits and food.
Typical Dutch products are our famous tulip-bulbs,
Gouda Cheese and the spirit this country takes a pride
in: Jenever. Since ages Dutch Gin is packed in a sober
brown stone bottle, a packing that wants to underline
the authentic quality of the Jenever.
MNO wished to preserve this traditional quality in
their surge for a design that would connect to the
contemporary Netherlands. In there new design they
therefore combine the age-old ceramic craftsmanship
with the possibilities of the hypermodern “rapid
prototyping” method. This mixture of modern
high tech en authentic craftsmanship resulted in a
Dutch Souvenir which reminds us of the present as
well as the past.
A package with content!
