No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips
The classical still life, redesigned with contemporary design from The Netherlands

During DesignTide Tokyo 2007, held in Japan from 31 October - 4 November, 19 designers from Eindhoven, Amsterdam and Rotterdam will be presenting work that illustrates the strength of Dutch design. The exhibition 'No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips' will be presented as a still life, like those familiar to us from the 'old masters', putting contemporary design from the Netherlands on display in a classically Dutch way.
The objects are presented as a still life, like those of the 17th century masters : an artistic composition of objects. In 'No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips' the different shapes, colours and textures have been arranged and illuminated to resemble a modern-day 'best room'; a three-dimensional painting of Dutch design at a high standard of quality.
As of now the NWCoT website is online: http://www.NWCOT.nl.

'No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips' is part of NL4 Design, a programme of activities initiated by the municipalities of Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the BNO (the Association of Dutch Designers) and Premsela (the Dutch platform for design and fashion) to create an international profile for Dutch design. In answer to this, Margo Konings and Maarten Baptist developed the concept for 'No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips'

Low Res Jenever bottle

When Ben Oostrum was asked by the European Ceramic Work Centre to come up with some new ideas on Dutch souvenirs, he realised that most of the things he brought home from abroad were things that were not actually souvenirs, such as food and drinks. If he were to visit the Netherlands a tourist, he would probably take home a bottle of Jenever: Dutch Gin sold in a traditional stone bottle. He made a model for a ceramic Jenever bottle, and worked on it with a rapid prototype milling machine to discover that the machine, with a certain setting, began to create patterns on its own. He let the machine do its work and so the relief on the traditional stone bottle was created. Oostrum: ‘The combination of the old-fashioned, authentic stone Jenever bottle and modern high-tech machinery is what makes this design stand out.’

Ben Oostrum (1960) studied sculpture at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. As a designer, it is this background that distinguishes him from the other designers. Oostrum: ‘My approach is different. Most designers start from a package of requirements, and I use form and shape as a point of departure.’ But to Oostrum, design is not the only thing that is important. Design and function must be in balance. ‘I hate things like a beautiful chair that is uncomfortable, as well as an ugly chair that is comfortable.’ When Oostrum designed the Jenever Bottle he collaborated with Jan Melis under the name of MNO, but now his studio is called BOO | Ben Oostrum Ontwerpt. BOO focuses mainly on the design of interior products, such as furniture, lighting and accessories. www.boontwerpt.nl
